TDHA is quickly becoming known for their First Flight Youth programs. With the goal of educating youth in the outdoors, programs have and are continuing to be developed that can be held across Texas for groups of all sizes.
The first TDHA Youth Day was held in San Antonio last August. With over 100 youth in attendance from ages 5-17, they were able to try their hand at shooting slingshots, BB guns, pellet guns, shotguns, rifles and shooting some clays. Many had never held a gun before. Safety was taught and emphasized at every station. Part of the DOVE 101 curriculum was covered prior to the youth and their parents heading to the field for their shooting experience. Lone Star Retrievers and Simply Southern Retrievers were on hand with their retrievers for gun dog demonstrations.
There were also representatives available from Texas Brigades, Bexar County 4H Shooting Sports, TYHP (Texas Youth Hunting Programs), and San Antonio Police Explorers to talk to the youth about their organizations. Although each of these organizations has different goals and offer varied experiences, ranging from law enforcement, shooting and learning about conservation and stewardship , the primary goal of these programs is to build character, develop leadership skills, recognize the importance of community service, and develop good citizenship.
Over 40 TDHA volunteers came together under the direction of TDHA’s Youth Activities director, Jeff McMillan to make certain that everything went off without a hitch. There were many partners & sponsors who contributed to the success of this event including: NRA, Texas Law Shield, Benelli, Stoger, Able Ammo, Pyramid Air, Texas Brigades, TYHP, TSRA, and Bexar County 4H Shooting Sports.
